forelle pears

I bought a bunch of forelle pears at Super King. I had never seen them before but thought I’d give them a try because they’re the perfect size for snacking. I had one a day after purchasing and it was sweet, but the texture was too hard. After about 4 days in a fruit basket, they were perfect. The pear was softer, sweet, and super easy to eat. I love them! I have to go back and buy more if they’ve got any.

visit with the iggys

Yesterday, I visited my best friend Jeanette and her family. A visit with the Iggys almost always results in trying new food and having a mega good eats day. Yesterday was no exception.

After hanging out at their house a bit, we made our way to Sanuki no Sato. I had to ask William for the restaurant’s name about 4 times.. but inside was cozy with giant white lanterns hanging from the ceiling. We were seated in a corner booth and I took a look at their very easy and simple Japanese/English menu. I wanted soup noodles for sure, but choosing one wasn’t easy. Everything sounded good! I finally went with nabeyaki udon which basically had everything in it. Shrimp tempura, vegetables, seaweed, mushrooms….

When my food arrived, there was a bowl of rice with tempura veggies on top. I was like, wow! Awesome! I tried a bit, and it was super good. We later found out, they had put Mia’s dish on my tray. Ha! She ended up getting her bowl of rice of course..

The udon was perfect. Broth was kept super hot because of the little pot, all ingredients blended so well. I ate the whole bowl. I didn’t think I could, but I did and it was awesome.

When we were finished at Sanuki no Sato, we went to Mitsuwa. Jeanette had places she had to show me. Specifically, MOCHICREAM & Lupicia – a tea vendor. Mochi can be unbelievable cute and pretty. Just look at those mochi doughnuts! I am pretty sure everything in the case was fake and for show, but the real things actually looked (and tasted) just as good!

Of course I had to buy some. The girl was giving me instructions on how to keep them, and I basically nodded and smiled. I think she was telling me that they needed to defrost a bit and had to be eaten within 24 hours. Well, that wouldn’t be a problem!

At Lupicia, I bought loose leaf tea – paradise green, melon oolong and momo. I can’t wait to turn them into iced teas!

I think I could’ve easily spent a few more hours in the store. And probably spent most of my paycheck. :O

On the drive home, we stopped for soft-serve at Fosters Freeze. Ice cream on a rainy chilly day – does this only happen in California? I doubt it, but it seems like such a natural thing to do.

Picture perfect vanilla cone. It soothed my throat and made me wish it was a hot sunny day that I could spend with my friends outdoors, by the beach! Funny how food can do that to me. So can music.

It was an excellent Saturday!

Dinner at Stone Brewing Co.’s Bistro

House made pretzels with spicy mustard and a sauce that tasted like taco seasoned cheese for dipping.

I’m a beer drinking novice at best. When I found out we were eating at a brewery I decided I’d make the most of it. After looking at the beer menu I decided to go with a flight of their housemades. Out of the four, I enjoyed the pale ale most. Smoked porter is not my bag and the IPA and AB left me wishing to swallow syrup. The bitterness is something I haven’t learned to enjoy, but a friend suggested drinking more to associate the bitterness with the pleasure of how it’ll make me feel!

Snappy spicy sausage! So good! Everyone else enjoyed their meals. Duck tacos. Tilapia. Jidori chicken. Ribs. Generous portions and great flavors.

Amazing desserts. Lemon & thyme creme brûlée. Chocolate log & coconut sorbet. I can’t remember the exact name but it was decadent.

El Rodeo

Perfect meal at El Rodeo in Palm Desert. After a hot day visiting Living Desert we found this little place on Yelp. Best surprise visit.

Super fresh salsa and chips. A spicy refreshing chavela to wash the chips down and my taco plate was excellent.

I wish they weren’t almost two hours away!

Feast, Family & Friends

Two feasts for the very same reason.. to get together with friends and family and eat really good food. We live such busy lives that taking time to sit down and reconnect is very important to me. Especially now, with families growing bigger.

Jeanette gave birth the morning after our Cornucopian Dinner! Talk about good food. The baby – Jackson – just couldn’t wait any longer. He arrived healthy and surrounded by people that fell in love with him instantly. Not long after, our friend Melissa gave birth to Abraham! Babies galore I tell ya.

Our Thanksgiving feast was perfect. We didn’t overdo it like we are infamous for. Sammi made two standout desserts and the turkey was deliciously moist and seasoned. The wine was flowing and the conversations were all over the place. We laughed a lot and RJ entertained us endlessly.

Umami Burger – Anaheim

After a long day at Disneyland, we went to Umami Burger for dinner. Unfortunately for us, there was the Anaheim Halloween parade going on so a bunch of side streets were closed. We had to park a few blocks away from the restaurant and walk there, but it wasn’t so bad. We actually scored a table on their patio which had a good view of the – rather weak and boring – parade.

I went with the Port-Stilton burger, Kim had the house burger and Ron had something called the Welsh Rabbit – it was beef, not rabbit. Kim and I both enjoyed our burgers, but Ron said his was lacking cheese sauce. Bummer because that’s the main reason why he ordered it.

an update

Yesterday I had a lovely meal with my sister and Julie at True Food Kitchen. Turkey bolognese. Dang it was good. The turkey burger Julie had was yum and so were Kim’s albacore sliders. I want a TFK near me!!

Last week, after a spur of the moment trip to Ikea, I redeemed my bogo coupon for soft serve. Ikea family first time user perk!

I’ve been bad at updating this food blog which gives me a bit of guilt because it’s kinda like neglecting a pet (project). I’m gonna try to get better with these mobile posts.
